He has performed Mozart with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Philip Glass on the BBC. Profiled on NBC’s Today show, Brubaker was presented by New York’s Carnegie Hall, at Michigan’s Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, and Boston’s Institute for Contemporary Arts. He is a frequent performer at New York City’s Poisson Rouge. His blog “PianoMorphosis” appears at ArtsJournal.com.

Pulitzer-Prize-winning Washington Post critic Tim Page has said: “I wouldn't trade Pollini, Argerich, Richard Goode, Peter Serkin or Bruce Brubaker (to mention a terrific younger artist) for any handful of Horowitzes!” Brubaker has appeared at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, at the Tanglewood Festival, at Finland’s Kuhmo Festival, Chicago’s Harris Theater, Antwerp’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Leipzig’s Gewandhaus. New recording projects include Meredith Monk’s complete piano music (with Ursula Oppens), a recording of music by Glass (for the French label Infiné), and a recording of Nico Muhly’s Drones for Iceland’s Bedroom Community label.

Bruce Brubaker has premiered music by Philip Glass, John Cage, Nico Muhly, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Brubaker studied at the Juilliard School in New York. At Juilliard, he originated an interdisciplinary performance project that brought together actors, dancers, and musicians. At Juilliard, he has appeared in public conversations with Philip Glass, Milton Babbitt, and Meredith Monk. His articles about music have appeared in several magazines as well as The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. A longtime member of the faculty at the Juilliard School, Brubaker now chairs the piano department at New England Conservatory in Boston.

Mudhoney with Easy Action and Protomartyr

SAT AUG 31
8:00 PM
6:30 PM LOBBY DOORS

Every now and then, a combination will go beyond “appropriate” or “good” and result in something that forever alters the universe. Just imagine a world without chocolate and peanut butter, Doc Martens and a leather jacket, Beavis and Butthead, and of course, Mudhoney and Sub Pop. April 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of both Mudhoney and Sub Pop Records, and there could be no better band to represent the label, past, present and future. Nirvana, Saint Etienne and Fleet Foxes are swell, but no other group has consistently kicked as much ass as Mudhoney, nor has anyone come close. Through two and a half decades, sarcastic grins remain implanted on their grizzled faces, even as empty bottles and the sneakers of a stage diver fly inches from their heads.

Along with this milestone celebration, Mudhoney have bestowed Vanishing Point upon us. It’s not their first album. Or third. Or seventh. Vanishing Point is Mudhoney’s ninth studio album, a truly remarkable feat for any band, but almost statistically impossible in their case, as we are talking about a band whose 1988 debut Touch Me I’m Sick b/w Sweet Young Thing Ain’t Sweet No More was such a volatile and desperate single that it’s miraculous the band made it through a weekend, let alone another year. In an age where only the newest of the new can survive (and even then, only for a few weeks at best), what could the decades-old Mudhoney have to offer? What could they possibly have left to say?

Real uninhibited rock music is harder and harder to locate these days, but Mudhoney make it easy for you, not just by being the flagship band of the greatest record label in the history of recorded time, but by writing songs that stick in your head long after your body has been buried. Vanishing Point isn’t just another entry in their impressive catalog, but the modern-day rock ‘n’ roll lashing we all deserve. As usual, Mark Arm says it best, as in “Sing This Song of Joy”: “I sing this song of joy / for all the girls and boys / dancing on your grave…”
In this brilliant reality send-up, we find Rachel, Winnie, Trixie and Trampolina in the jungle, trying their best to score at challenges that involve singing, dancing, dating, dieting and, of course, large insects. Tickets are on sale now.

THE KINSEY SICKS formed by freak accident in December of 1993 in San Francisco. Since then, they have written and performed scores of musicals, starred in their own Off-Broadway show at New York’s legendary Studio 54, toured internationally, recorded eight albums and been the subject of two feature films. Their extensive and remarkably diverse fan base includes people of all ages, genders and religions (and several political positions). The New York Times praises their “voices sweet as birdsong” and Variety calls them “one act that should not be missed.” The San Francisco Chronicle says, “Their mangling of hit songs hits genius level.” (Read, see and hear more about them at www.kinseysicks.com.)

THE KINSEY SICKS were, in fact, contestants in Season 3 of “America’s Got Talent.” Their first performances brought standing ovations from the audience and gushing praise from the judges. One performance was featured as the theme footage for the pre-season trailer. However, once show producers caught wind of the Kinseys’ brand of politics, flavor of humor, and Rachel’s personal hygiene, they were cheerfully shown the door, and the footage of the performance footage was left on the cutting room floor.

“AMERICA’S NEXT TOP BACHELOR HOUSEWIFE CELEBRITY HOARDER MAKEOVER STAR GONE WILD” brings the group’s firsthand knowledge of the reality show experience to bear, poking fun at the onstage unreality and backstage surreality of the genre. And, of course, all in glorious 4-part harmony! The musical boasts some of THE KINSEY SICKS’ best music of these last two decades – wicked parodies and objectionable originals – plus some brilliant new songs about stardom, contentment and the hunger for fame. And, of course, what would any reality show be without a production number in Yiddish? Will they win? Will they stay together? Will they withstand the pressure? Will they sing on key for once? Find out with the group the Huffington Post says “never fails to bring down the house.”
Bassist Ron Holzner served a 15-year sentence with Chicago doom legends Trouble and Rachel Barton Pine brings her frightening classical chops to a relatively new instrument, the Viper. Finding groups like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Saint Vitus, Trouble, Pentagram, Candlemass and Slayer to be common influences, the band wrote and played shows around Chicago for the first half of 2009, culminating in the release of the“Dismal Times” EP in June. Featuring three original songs that meld classic, crunchy doom and NWOBHM vibes with a solid dose of thrashy bludgeoning alongside covers of two choice doom classics by Pentagram and Witchfinder General, the EP was hailed by critics as “astounding,” and “pure, head-banging bliss” (MaximumMetal.com) and prompted Doommantia.com to write, “Can’t wait till the band gives us a full length with all originals...they have all the songwriting capabilities to make one of the best albums ever.”

In July 2010, Earthen Grave closed the Great Performers of Illinois festival at Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago’s famed Millennium Park, where Rachel received the 2010 Great Performer of Illinois award. The band was featured on NBC’s Today Show and live in studio on WGN’s nationally televised Midday News. Earthen Grave has shared the stage with such luminaries as Megadeth, Black Label Society, Mayhem, Macabre, Anvil, Machine Head, Pentagram, Novembers Doom, Raven, Skindred, and Nachtmystium and played at Indianapolis’ Templars of Doom III festival, Milwaukee’s Rave, Wisconsin’s Brat Stop and Vnuk’s, New York’s Piano’s and Europa Club, and Philadelphia’s Mill Creek Tavern, as well as at Chicago-area landmarks like House of Blues, The Metro, Double Door, Reggie’s Rock Club, Shark City, Chicago City Limits, Abbey Pub, and Pearl Room.

WBEZ Welcomes Marc Maron

SUN, AUG 04
8:00 PM
6:30 PM LOBBY DOORS

For over twenty years, Marc Maron has been writing and performing raw, honest and thought-provoking comedy for print, stage, radio and television. Based in NYC, this soulful, fun-loving powerhouse all-women’s klezmer sextet has toured from Vienna to Vancouver since 1998. Band repertoire ranges from rambunctious to entrancing: neo-traditional folk dance, mystical melodies, Yiddish swing and retro tango, late Soviet-era Jewish drinking song, re-grooved standards, and genre-defying originals.

Formed by drummer / leader Eve Sicular, ISLE of KLEZBOS features alumnae of Juilliard, Eastman and Manhattan Schools of Music as well as Harvard, and has been honored with multiple awards by The New York State Council on the Arts, Outmusic, and Sparkplug Foundation.Various Klezbos bandmates have performed in Sicular’s musical documentary theater piece J. EDGAR KLEZMER: Songs from My Grandmother’s FBI Files, and several also play together in Metropolitan Klezmer (octet formed in 1994). From Seattle’s Bumbershoot to St. Louis’ Edison Theater to Spiegeltent at Bard, from Vienna’s Porgy and Bess to Joe’s Pub at NYC’s Public Theater, BAM Cafe to Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturday, Merkin Hall to Michigan Womyn’s Music Fest, National Yiddish Book Center to The Museum at Eldridge Street, Isle of Klezbos tours have lately brought the band to Berkeley Jewish Music Festival, Stanford University, and residency at Skidmore College. Fall 2012 debuts included Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts and our first Southern exposure: Tennessee Tech!
Attell used this prestigious degree to land amazing jobs in the food service industry - as a waiter. At night he would hit the "open mic" circuit in Manhattan. After many years, Attell worked his way up through the club scene onto the road, touring across America as a national headliner and developing a huge following among fans and the industry alike.

Dave Attell is currently the creator and host of “Dave’s Old Porn” on Showtime. “Dave’s Old Porn” has featured such talent as Whitney Cummings, Chelsea Handler, Adam Carolla and Daniel Tosh. Season two will be airing this fall.

He was named one of the “25 Funniest People in America” by Entertainment Weekly Magazine. His caustic wit, rapid-fire delivery and his choice of material that can best be described as "very adult" has earned him the reputation as a "comic's comic." But if you ask Attell, he’d say, "I’m just trying to get some laughs and sell some drinks."

In 2001, Attell used this love of booze and laughter to create and host the hit series, "Insomniac with Dave Attell" for Comedy Central. A travelogue show in which Attell goes from city to city looking for late-night fun, The New York Times called the show, "a doubly rare beast, a comedy without rancor and a travel show about the virtues of the American underdog." To Attell, the Insomniac show is more of a cross between "Girls Gone Wild” and “Cops”.

After four seasons of “Insomniac,” Attell taped several hour-long “Insomniac” specials overseas in Japan, Germany, England and Brazil. Once back in the states, he headed out on a thirty-five city theatre tour ending in Vegas, where he hosted a two-hour special for Comedy Central featuring Sean Rouse, Greg Geraldo and Dane Cook, some of the biggest comics in the country.

Dave Attell has made numerous appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O'Brien,” “The Howard Stern Show,” “Last Call with Carson Daly” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”. He also appeared in Chris Rock’s cult film "Pootie Tang”. Other television credits include FOX's "Arrested Development," NBC's "Ed," HBO, Comedy Central’s "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" and his own half-hour stand-up special "Comedy Central Presents Dave Attell”.

When not on the road, Attell makes regular appearances at the Comedy Cellar in New York City.

Jess Godwin with Marirose Weldon and Funky Hot Grits

SAT JUN 29
8:00 PM
6:30 PM LOBBY DOORS
Honest, unassuming, and passionate, Jess Godwin possesses one of the most dynamic voices both in and beyond the Chicago music scene. Combine the music of Alicia Keys, Sara Bareilles, Norah Jones, and Stevie Wonder, and you get the unique sound of this energetic redhead. Her soul-bearing lyrics will touch your heart, and her music will make you tap your feet and sing along at the same time.
Born in Atlanta, Godwin moved around a lot as a child – 5 states and 10 different schools to be exact! Eventually, Jess and her family finally settled in Chicago. She has been a proud resident of the Windy City for the past 14 years.
She has released four EPs, each one demonstrating her tremendous talent and wide-ranging musical influences: To the Heart of It, Quiet the Room (produced by Jan Smith, vocal coach to Usher, Justin Bieber, The Band Perry), Klutz, and her most recent self titled EP released in November. Godwin’s single, Katy’s Side, was featured on Keeping up with the Kardashians this summer.

93XRT Flashback welcomes The Zombies with Et Tu Bruce

FRI JUN 28
8:00 PM
6:30 PM LOBBY DOORS
By this stage of the rock ‘n’ roll plot, most bands that made their first mark in the 1960s are either at home tending their gardens or peddling nostalgia to finance their ex-wives. Very few are enhancing their legendary reputations with new releases, fresh songwriting and tireless touring. That’s where the Zombies come in.
Underpinned, just as they were in those early days, by the individual and collective brilliance of vocal craftsman Colin Blunstone and keyboard virtuoso Rod Argent, the Zombies are simultaneously celebrating the past and seizing the future. Not for them the option of sitting home and spinning yarns, as they’d be quite entitled to do, of making their undying hit singles, sharing UK bills with Dusty Springfield, US shows with the Beach Boys, or following the Beatles’ Abbey Road sessions for Sgt. Pepper to make an album that would reverberate for generations to come.

“Last year,” says Blunstone, “we played in the UK, US, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Japan and the Philippines. It was incredible.” 2013 contains a new live album, three separate American tours in it (not to mention a festival in Central Park, a cruise with the Moody Blues and much more) and the group are constantly in demand for the prestigious US network television music shows, interviews and radio sessions. Talk about just desserts for dues paid.

The amazing new chapters that the Zombies have added to their story in recent times have created a momentum that gets greater by the year. The group have finally received their due as the great undervalued masters of the original British invasion, with rave reviews and acknowledgements about their influence from an inventory of modern artists, from Paul Weller to Dave Grohl.

But far from resting on those laurels, the band are forging ahead, with a bulging 2013 datebook and an enthusiastic commitment to start work – just as soon as there’s time – on the 2014 release of what will be the much-anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Breathe Out, Breathe In.

Meanwhile, there’s The Zombies Live In The UK, a new ten-track collection recorded on the road last year, and released in May to coincide with the British leg of their 2013 itinerary. Sony Music release a similar live album in the US as part of their Extended Versions series around March 2013.

“We’re very excited about the way the band’s playing,” says Argent. “Colin’s voice is as strong as it ever was, and I feel that my voice is better than it used to be, because I’ve worked on it. Our chops, both playing and singing, are better now than they were before.”

Et Tu Bruce

Described as “West London meets West Coast”, Et Tu Brucé blend pop, rock, folk, and country, and tie them all together with their signature harmonic sound. Composed of Londoners Jamie White, Matthew O’Toole, and brothers Craig and Darryn Bruce, they are fast becoming the band to watch. Likened to a number of great bands, they inhabit a space on the spectrum where few others reside. They write, perform, and produce their own records, and in doing so have collected a number of accolades from established journalists and a host of new music champions. Their music echoes from the golden age of records, crunching through the barriers and fixing itself to the future. Formed in 2010, Et Tu Brucé have a rich reputation on the live circuit in London, headlining some of the most illustrious city venues, such as The Water Rats, Dublin Castle, The Half Moon, The Hope & Anchor, and countless more. Fixtures on national and commercial radio stations, Et Tu Brucé continue to aim for excellence.

They constantly strive to surprise their audiences and themselves through relentless reinvention. From dreamy pop to angular art-rock, CHEER-ACCIDENT strikes a powerful balance between personalized and unique studio wizardry and the visceral excitement of a well-honed, explosive live rock band. The band is a quintet at its foundation, fronted by Carmen Armillas, whose powerfully emotive voice has recently led CHEER-ACCIDENT down the path of even deeper connectedness with their already-loyal audience. Presenting itself in various configurations, the band’s core personnel is frequently augmented by some of Chicago’s finest musicians. Their body of work is unparalleled in its ambition and originality, and their two latest releases, “Fear Draws Misfortune” and “No Ifs, Ands or Dogs” (both on Cuneiform Records), demonstrate how the band continues to improve with each passing year.

Currently the band is being profiled in the feature-length film, “Romantic Warriors” (a documentary about modern progressive music, presently getting quite a bit of play on public television throughout the country this spring/summer 2011), which will undoubtedly catapult CHEER-ACCIDENT helplessly and gloriously into Mass Consciousness…
Bethesda is the name of the sacred place in ancient times where people would flock in hopes of experiencing the healing power of the waters said to reside in the pools there.

Bethesda, the band from Kent, Ohio, also delivers an experience through consciously crafted songs, stirring live shows and the desire to create a community from the new believers that they meet.

Bethesda uses songs infused with uplifting messages, and on new album The Reunion, they drew inspiration from family and friends. “We wanted to focus on what we do well: embrace our storytelling side”, says founding member and guitarist/vocalist Eric Ling. “This is the most thematic of our releases. The concept of reunion ties these songs together.” Eric describes the challenge to compose a song at the request of his grandfather. “It was hard - nothing I wrote captured the richness of his life. Then he died... I had a breakthrough while at his funeral, meeting all these people from his past, men he had worked with in the coal mine - it was a reunion around his life. It made me think of a Civil War story, how widows went to the battlefields to search for the belongings of their lost husbands, sons, brothers. It was believed that if the articles were found, they’d be able to move on. Seeing my Grandfather’s history on that day helped me find the words.”

The Reunion’s ten tracks feature Shanna Delaney’s crystal clear vocals joined with Eric Ling’s warm vocal harmonies, energetic guitar and banjo by Jesse Scaggs, richly interwoven fiddle from Christopher Black, knee-slapping rhythms from Justin Rife on drums and Dan Corby laying down the bottom on bass which, as an ensemble, crescendo into a indie-approved, Americana hipster-hootenanny. Bethesda traveled to Denver, Colorado to work with Tim Gerak at Mammoth Cave Studios, tapping into the local folk scene. “This album is an evolution for us - I feel we captured the energy of the live shows in a whole new way on this release. We want an album for our fans to re-experience seeing us in concert.“ describes Eric.

The six-piece band is led by Eric & Shanna, who met while studying at Kent State. “Our first date was a road trip to Cleveland for a Badly Drawn Boy concert. We got completely lost, missed the show and ended up at Ruby Tuesday’s for dinner .. and she still wanted to see me after that!” remembers Eric. They did have to work out their musical differences - Shanna was in music theater, with roots in bluegrass music; Eric was into angsty singer-songwriters including Elliot Smith and Bright Eyes. “I gave up my desire to be dissonant, she started to open up to a more indie approach.“ remembers Eric. It was in the healing waters of the Caribbean that they further committed to making beautiful music together. “I remember talking with Eric while we were swimming one day on our honeymoon, telling him that playing music needed to always be a part of my life.” said Shanna. “Eric promised we would figure out a way for us to always be making music.”

When they met Justin and bassist Dan Corby at a progressive, artsy community church, a casual collaboration soon turned out to be an epiphany, and they became a real band. As Bethesda grew, Jesse Scaggs was added for an even bigger dynamic with melodic electric guitar, and violinist and keyboardist Christopher Black joined to enhance a more traditional folk flavor.

Bethesda has released a debut full length album Love In The Time Of Tra La La (2010), and the EP Dream Tiger And Other Tails (2012). They’re a prolific live band, having played Bonnaroo, South x Southwest and The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame festivals in 2012 along with dozens of other gigs. “Bethesda is all about building relationships to connect with our audience,” says Eric. “We don’t have to come up with schtick - we strive to be honest and original.” In the tradition of their name, Bethesda will move you in many ways, brightly immersing their listeners in authentic, high-spirited good times.

Bursting forth from Canada’s capital, native Producer/DJ crew A Tribe Called Red is making an impact on the global electronic scene with a truly unique sound. Made up of three members – two-time Canadian DMC Champion DJ Shub, DJ NDN and Bear Witness – the group has created a signature style called powwowstep, a mix of traditional pow wow vocals and drumming with cutting-edge electronic music. DJ Bear Witness doubles as the crew’s visual artist and creates stunning, political and sometimes humorous videos that incorporate film and pop culture references to native people and reclaim the aboriginal image. They’re known for creating and running the Electric Pow Wow events in Ottawa, which showcased native talent and aboriginal culture, alongside an open and wild party, and are, in a sense, the most recent evolution of the pow wow event.

Since starting out in late 2010, A Tribe Called Red has gained popularity not only within urban club scenes, but also with the youth on many native reservations. Within a couple years, they became the face of Urban Native youth renaissance, proudly championing their heritage while being on top of popular music, fashion and art. Their self-titled album was released at the end of March 2012 and got long listed for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize (Canadian response to the Mercury prize).
JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound celebrate CD release of “Howl” on Bloodshot Records – available for purchase May 21!

With Howl, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound enters the next chapter of its soul sound evolution. In December 2012, the band holed up at Hotel2Tango Studio in Montreal to work with producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and dove headfirst into previously unfamiliar sonic territories and tough-yet-transfixing lyrical matter. By approaching the new album with this direct and free outlook, what began with the raw soul of 2011’s Want More advances in new, exciting directions.

Throughout Howl, the dark side of love and longing is explored by frontman JC Brooks’s starkly personal lyrics and the Uptown Sound’s willingness to bare all their influences and let the grooves fall where they may. A collective evolution has been made where influence meets experience, and this organic progression results in 11 songs that are more open than ever both in message and vibe.

Howl is soul music by children of the post-punk era. It’s the sound of a band that cut its teeth listening to Purple Rain and In On the Killtaker, is drawn to the theatrical-cum-creative auras of Tina Turner and Otis Redding, and has most recently hustled big festival stages where adventurous listeners come away rejuvenated and undeniably converted.

With a taut minimalist blend of rock and R&B punctuating JC Brooks’s potent delivery and brutally honest words, Howl creates a mystique at the same time it induces sing-alongs and hip-shakes. Tracks like the eponymous “Howl” and “Rouse Yourself” are pleas for snapping out of emotional apathy, as in the latter when Brooks first coos in falsetto and then belts a cautionary chorus in harmony, “If we had forever / I hope we’d just get better / that’s why it’s such a shame / the ways we stay the same.”

Just as it embraces past artistic influences, Howl covers the range of emotion from celebratory pop to crestfallen ballad. “River” is vintage gospel narrative, complete with Brooks’s solo show-stopping, open-throated vocal sear, and a rhythm section that could’ve backed the Memphis greats during the ‘60s. “Before You Die” struts with the carefree, party atmosphere of Tom Tom Club with auxiliary percussion, handclaps, and some Bernie Worrell psychedelic-pop wall of synth.

Yoko and the Oh No's
Yoko and the Oh No’s are the offspring of Indie-Pop band The New Originals. Former member Max Goldstein and current members Max Loebman and Stef Roti are collaborating once again, but this time to create an Indie Garage Rock & Soul sound that’s intricate, raw, and fucking fine.

The Ye Ye's
An all-female band with covers from around the world, leaning heavily on famous ye-ye artists like Francoise Hardy, France Gall, Sylvie Vartan, and more.

Absolutely Not
"Absolutely Not is the brainchild of Donnie Moore and generates infectious one-two beat punk chords. It's an Iggy Pop meets Kevin Barnes approach to jagged garage-rock." - TIMEOUT Chicago

Hailed by The Guardian for their “special fluency and zest that sets them apart,” Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering vibrant performances for audiences of all kinds. Since its formation in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has gained national attention with concerts and recordings that meld the energy of rock music with the precision and nuance of classical chamber works.
In addition to its national performances, Third Coast Percussion’s hometown presence includes an annual Chicago series, with four to five concerts in locations around the city. The ensemble has collaborated in concert with acclaimed ensembles Eighth Blackbird, Signal, and the Garth Newel Piano Quartet, pianists Amy Briggs and Lisa Moore, cellists Nicholas Photinos and Tobias Werner, flautist Tim Munro, vocalist Ted Hearne, and video artists Luftwerk. Third Coast’s passion for community outreach includes a wide range of residency offerings while on tour, in addition to a longterm residency with the Davis Square Park Community Band on Chicago’s South Side.

The members of Third Coast Percussion—Owen Clayton Condon, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore—hold degrees in music performance from Northwestern University, the Yale School of Music, the New England Conservatory, and Rutgers University.
